How Long Does It Take to See Results From Microneedling?

Microneedling is an amazing, powerful way to get your skin rejuvenated. It prompts your body to replace old, damaged skin with fresh new skin cells that erase age spots, minimize wrinkles, and brighten your complexion at the same time. Like many of the best things in life, the results of this treatment aren’t immediately. At Still Waters Day & Medical Spa in Pensacola, FL, we want you to understand everything it’s important to know about this treatment and get all your questions answered like how long to see results from microneedling?

How Long To See Results from Microneedling?

This treatment offers an array of results you’ll love. Some of them, like skin tightening, will show up nearly immediately. Others will take between four and six weeks to fully develop. That’s the time it takes your body to ramp up collagen production and cellular turnover so you can get the new, healthy skin you want.

The Benefits of Waiting

While we all love instant gratification, we also know that some things are worth the wait. That includes the benefits of microneedling. Knowing how long to see results from microneedling is one of the important things to know with this treatment. The fact that it takes some time for your results to manifest offers two important advantages.

First, your new skin is entirely natural. The reason it takes a little time for the results to show themselves is that you’re waiting on your body to do the work. The treatment simply sends your body the right signals telling it to do that work! But no part of the process involves chemicals, incisions, stitching, or anything unnatural. It’s all your own body producing results.

Second, because the changes come on gradually, you won’t leave work on Friday looking one way and show up shockingly different on Monday morning–prompting everyone in the office to talk about how you’ve had work done. Instead, you’ll gradually start looking fresher and younger–prompting everyone in the office to be jealous of whatever is keeping you so healthy!

Other FAQ About Microneedling

What Exactly Is This Treatment?

This treatment is also known as collagen induction, and that’s because it induces collagen growth! The tiny, hair-thin needles of the SkinPen we use for your treatment make microscopic injuries in your skin. These injuries aren’t enough to hurt you, but they are enough to signal to your body to marshall its repair and rejuvenation forces and send them right to the skin of your face.

Over the next few weeks, your body will repair your epidermis, making it thicker. It will also build the extracellular matrix, giving your facial skin a firmer foundation to sit on. You’ll also notice new, fresh skin replacing places where you have sun damage, acne scars, or hyperpigmentation. As this happens, your wrinkles and fine lines will soften and you’ll look years younger.

What Is the SkinPen?

There are dermal rollers available all over the internet that claim to do the same thing as this treatment, but the SkinPen is the only microneedling device cleared by the FDA and clinically proven to be both safe and effective.

The SkinPen gets its name because it looks like an ordinary pen. The needles on the SkinPen are much finer than on any other device, and it’s simple for our practitioners to adjust the needle depth to match any skin type and texture, as well as to adapt it to changes on each individual face. On all of us, our skin is thicker in certain places, like on the cheeks, and thinner in others. Ordinary dermal rollers try to strike a “happy medium” and fail. They’re either too severe for thin skin or not deep enough for thicker skin.

Does It Really Work?

The SkinPen has been proven effective in clinical trials. In addition, surveys show that 90% of those who have a treatment with the SkinPen would recommend the treatment to their family and friends.

What About Those Home Rollers?

If you’re still not convinced that home dermal rollers aren’t effective, there are a few other things you should know about using them. Not only are they not as effective as the SkinPen, but they aren’t as safe or comfortable, either.

Safety

Our skin exists to protect. In fact, one of the reasons we get scars is that our body often rushes the process of healing the skin to keep out infection. In other words, the body prioritizes your safety from infection over your “looks” and scar tissue forms. (Don’t worry: the micro-injuries caused by the SkinPen won’t cause scarring!)

A bacterial infection is a serious danger, and that’s just what you risk when you use an at-home roller. The roller itself and every single needle must be perfectly sterile. Your skin must be just as sterile, and that’s all hard to accomplish at home.

Comfort

The SkinPen is also more comfortable since we can give you a numbing treatment before we start. This ensures your comfort throughout the whole process. There’s nothing you can get for at-home use that will make you as comfortable during treatment. Dermal roller needles are larger than the SkinPen, too, so ultimately you’re facing a more painful treatment with nothing to relieve that pain.

What’s Treatment Like?

It all starts with a consultation. During the consultation, we’ll look at your skin, consider your needs and goals, and understand your medical history. Once we’ve determined that this treatment is right for you, we’ll apply the numbing cream. This takes from 30 to 60 minutes to take effect.

Once your skin is numb, we will sterilize your face and use the SkinPen to cover the entire surface, moving in small, circular motions. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to finish, depending on how many areas are being treated, so you should expect to spend between one and two hours total at our spa for treatment depending on your individual needs.

What Specifically Does This Treat?

This treatment is great in addressing:

  • Enlarged pores
  • Smaller wrinkles and fine lines
  • Sagging skin
  • Uneven pigmentation and sun spots
  • Acne scars
  • Redness and skin tone issues

Am I a Candidate for This Treatment?

If you’re at least 20 and in reasonably good health, this is almost certainly suitable for you. This treatment is good for people of all ages and all skin types, textures, and colors. It poses no risk for those with darker skin like laser or IPL treatments sometimes do.

If you have a fever, rash, or infection in the treatment area, you’ll need to wait for treatment. You may also have to find a different treatment if you have certain rare blood diseases or clotting disorders, but we’ll help you with the details when you come for a consultation. Rest assured that there is a treatment that’s suitable for you!

What if I’m Pregnant?

One of the best things about this treatment is that it’s suitable for pregnant women. Other treatments, like chemical peels or dermal fillers, aren’t safe for pregnant women or the effects haven’t been fully studied. Because this treatment relies entirely on your own body’s natural processes of rejuvenation, it’s safe even for women who are carrying a child.

What if I Have Acne?

This isn’t specifically an acne treatment, however, it does help to clear up acne in some cases. The main benefit for acne sufferers is that it reduces pore size and unclogs pores. This gets rid of excess oil and also allows acne medication to seep into the skin and work better.

It doesn’t actually make your medications more effective: it just gives them a channel to go deeper so they can do their job. If you suffer from acne, you can get this treatment. You should also talk to us about other options that could help clear up your skin and minimize the possibility of scarring.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

Most people need between three and six treatments to see their final results. For younger people, one to two treatments are often enough. It all depends on your body’s unique cellular turnover rate, your age, and how you’ve treated your skin in the past.

Once you have the results you’re looking for, you can keep them up by coming for a maintenance appointment once every three to six months.

How Long Do Results Last?

This is a personal question. Each person’s skin is unique, and it’s impossible to say for certain how long an individual’s treatment will last. In general, however, most people enjoy their results for at least eight to 12 weeks. If you take care of your skin, you may find the results lasting far longer.

How Can I Extend My Results?

If you take care of your skin, you can expect your results to last a long time. Some important self-care steps to follow include:

  1. Drink at least eight cups of water per day and more if you’re active or live in a dry climate
  2. Get plenty of vitamins A, C, D, E, and K along with all the B vitamins
  3. Do not smoke
  4. Minimize your alcohol intake and drink plenty of water between drinks
  5. Avoid spending time in the sun without sunscreen or direct protection
  6. Eat a diet that minimizes sugar and processed foods

Is This Treatment Only for the Face?

The SkinPen can be used nearly anywhere on your body as long as there’s no active infection at the site. We use it most often on the face, but it also helps to erase stretch marks on the thighs, buttocks, back, arms, abdomen, and hips. It’s also useful in lifting the neck, and a series of treatments can be a great option for those who would like a neck lift but aren’t ready for an invasive surgical procedure.
