What is Botox?
Botox is derived from the bacterium clostridium botulinum. It has been used for many years for medical reasons and is completely safe. In 2002, the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) approved Botox for cosmetic purposes. Botox is diluted and injected, actually blocking the nerve that contracts the muscle. This causes a relaxation of the muscles and results in a softening of the expression lines. In 2005, almost 3.3 million procedures were performed with FDA-approved BOTOX® Cosmetic.

Botox injections for wrinkles gradually start to soften the facial lines within three days, and the full therapeutic effect is visible in ten to fourteen days. Botox is injected with a tiny needle and is no more painful than a pinprick. No anesthesia is necessary. Some people need a touch-up to achieve the full desired effect, given ten to fourteen days after the first treatment. An initial Botox treatment lasts approximately three months. With reapplication, the results begin to last longer. When combined with other cosmetic enhancements, the Botox results are even more profound and longer lasting.
